It turns out that the Austin bomber, Mark Anthony Conditt (because all murderers have three names), used an “exotic” battery to power his bombs, not just off-the-shelf Evereadys. Once the cops had an intact device to look at, they could track orders for batteries that were sent to Austin. The moral of the story: Shop local, and pay cash.

Honestly, I figured he was pretty much hosed the moment he shipped a package. FedEx/UPS/etc can instantly backtrack a package to the exact moment and location where it entered the system, and all those locations have cameras for reasons just like this. It would’ve taken more time than the exotic battery route, but knowing what store he used (thereby what area he’s likely in/is familiar with) and an approximation of height/weight/build/ethnicity definitely is a big step.
